Complete Silage Processing Line: From Baling to Feeding on Modern Farms

On a 200-cow dairy in modern farms, the herd manager cut daily feeding labor from 9 hours to 3.5 by wiring four machines into one silage processing line:

  • Triturador de forragem
  • Enfardadeira e embaladora de silagem
  • TMR mixer wagon
  • Tricycle feed spreader

The payoff was not the equipment itself—it was the workflow. No more double-handling. No silage sitting in open piles overnight. Same ration quality in every pen.

A complete silage machine line is not a shopping list. It is a closed loop from the field to the feed bunk, with no manual transfer in between. Here is how the five stages fit together, and how to size them.

Stage 1: Forage Harvest and Pre-Cut

Corn, sorghum, alfalfa, or grass comes in at 60-75% moisture. Two machines cover most farms:

  • Self-propelled colhedora de forragem — for 100+ cow operations pulling 5+ tonnes per hour across multiple fields.
  • Triturador de forragem/chaff cutter — for 20-100 cow farms cutting at the barn. Output runs 400 kg/h (electric) to 4 t/h (diesel).

Aim for a 2-3 cm chop on corn silage, 4-6 cm on grass and alfalfa. Anything longer hurts packing density later and slows fermentation.

Stage 2: Silage Baling and Wrapping (Optional, but Worth It)

For farms that store silage in bales rather than bunkers, a silage baler and wrapper is the workhorse. Taizy’s TZ-55-52 turns out 50-85 round bales per hour (Φ55×52 cm, 65-500 kg per bale). Wrapped bales keep for 12-24 months with under 15% dry matter loss.

Skip this stage only if you already run a sealed bunker silo and want to feed straight into the TMR mixer. For most African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian farms without bunker infrastructure, bales are the practical choice.

Stage 3: Storage and Fermentation

Wrapped bales need 6-8 weeks of anaerobic fermentation before you open them. Stack on a raised gravel pad—direct soil contact causes bottom spoilage within 3-4 weeks. Open the bale 24-48 hours before mixing to let any built-up butyric acid off-gas.

Stage 4: TMR Mixing

The TMR feed mixer wagon is where ration accuracy lives. The vertical feed mixer (5-12 m³) handles whole bales and long fiber better. The horizontal silage feed mixer is faster on pre-chopped silage but cannot tear open a bale.

A quick sizing rule: 1 m³ of mixer bin holds roughly 200-250 kg of mixed TMR. On a 100-cow dairy feeding 25 kg per cow per day, that works out to a 12-15 m³ mixer to finish one batch per milking shift.

Stage 5: Feeding and Distribution

The last link is the silage spreader—a tricycle-mounted bin that drops mixed feed along the alley. Bidirectional discharge (standard on the Taizy TZ-3 and TZ-5) lets one operator feed both sides of a 3m alley without reversing. Throughput runs 1.5-2.5 tonnes per fill cycle.

3 Common Layout Mistakes of Silage Processing Line

  • Mismatched throughput. A 4 t/h chopper feeding a 2 t/h baler wrapper creates a bottleneck. Keep upstream capacity within 20% of downstream.
  • Long transfer paths. Every extra 10m between the mixer and the feed alley adds about 5 minutes per load. Keep the mixer within 30m of the largest pen.
  • No backup power. Electric mixers and spreaders stop the moment the grid drops. A 10-15 kVA diesel generator covers 80% of mid-size farm needs.

FAQ of Forage Silage Processing Line

Do I need all 5 stages for a small farm?

No. On 20-50 cow farms, skip the silage baling machine and feed straight from the chopper into a combined mixer-spreader tricycle. The full 5-stage line starts to pay off above 100 cows.

Can I add stages later as my herd grows?

Yes. Most farms start with a chopper and spreader, add a TMR mixer around 50 cows, and bring in a forage baler at 100+ cows once bunker storage stops being practical. Taizy machines are built for incremental scaling.

What is the ROI timeline for a complete line?

With 3-5 fewer workers per shift and 15-20% less feed waste than open-pile silage, most farms recover the full equipment investment in 14-22 months. The Middle East sees the fastest payback; regions with cheap manual labor see the slowest.
